Album Review

After breaking into the mainstream with his hit "Margaritaville" two years earlier, Jimmy Buffett stuck to his formula of mixing fun, up-tempo songs with slower, reflective ones. Although the album contains concert favorites including the playful "Fins" and the Caribbean-flavored title track, it seems as if Buffett doesn't have as many deep insights to share on this release. The vocal help from James Taylor on "Treat Her Like a Lady" adds to the singalong chorus, but overall the ballads are uninteresting. As a result, this album marks a low point for Jimmy Buffett in a decade in which he delivered one solid album after another. However, Volcano is notable for its inclusion of a wonderful children's song ("Chanson Por les Petits Enfantes"), complete with nursery rhyme lyrics. This album is for Parrotheads only, as most of the popular tracks are available on compilations like Songs You Know By Heart.

Customer Reviews

One of his best!

The "professional" reviewer blew it here. . . as well as proving his incompetence in all things Jimmy Buffett. True, most of the "hits" can be found on "Songs You Know By Heart". . . but that is like saying don't ever buy an earlier album with just a few hit songs when you can buy a greatest hits album. If you are looking for a greatest hits compilation "SYKBH" is great, although I would probably recommend the more modern "Tales From Margaritaville", it has all that "SYKBH" has, plus all current greatest hits as well. But this isn't a greatest hits review. . . it is a review for Volcano which includes the first release of Fins, Volcano and Boat Drinks. As mentioned above Treat Her Like A Lady and Chanson Pour Les Petit Enfants also are noble additions to the Jimmy Buffett canon which makes this album atleast 50% highly listenable which, to me, does allow it to stand on its own. The remaining 5 tracks are indeed quite listenable as well, but would better fit the description "deeper cuts", however, that hardly leaves this disc as passable! I don't think the same Litmus test could be used even with the venerable "Changes In Attitudes, Changes in Latitudes" or even "A-1-A" or "White Sportscoat & A Pink Crustacean" which the reviewers hailed as no less than "revolutionary".

Best Buffett Album Ever

The reviewer does not have a clue on this one. This album is one of Jimmy's best. On several songs you can just sit back and close your eyes and allow Jimmy to take you to the islands. Forget about the mainstream hits on this one. It's all about the song you didn't hear on the radio.

I don't know what the reviewer was thinking when he/she wrote this. I grew up with this album playing, and have so many good memories. This is Buffett at his finest, to say the least. Southern, tropical, reflective, and just good music to smile to on a sunny day, while making dinner, or for whatever. I completely disagree with the iTunes reviewer, and suggest you share in the magic of this special collection.

Jimmy Buffett translated his easygoing Gulf Coast persona into more than just a successful recording career -- he expanded into clothing, nightclubs, and literature -- but the basis of the business empire that kept him on the Fortune magazine list of highest-earning entertainers was his music. Born in southern Mississippi and raised in Alabama, Buffett moved to Nashville to try to make it in country music in the late '60s. After signing to the Barnaby label, he released one album, 1970's Down to...
