Album Review

Fabrizio De André did not record very often after the early '80s, so every new album and tour was a major event. This live album and video documents the tour for Anime Salve, the last album De André would release, and it appeared a few months after the songwriter's untimely death to lung cancer. But for the dubious commercial opportunism of its timing, this record is unimpeachable. A notorious perfectionist, De André would only work with the best, and once again his supporting band is outstanding, both on the early classics and the more ambitious world music-oriented new compositions. Highlights include an extended segment of his concept album masterpiece La Buona Novella, and a beautiful duet with the singer's daughter Luvi on the traditional "Geordie." A second volume taken from the same concert appeared on 2001.

With the death of Fabrizio De André from cancer on January 11, 1999, Italy lost one of its most modern singer/songwriters. Inspired by the songwriting of Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen, De André's songs encompassed Genoese folk songs, French protest/social commentary, beatnik "stream of consciousness" poetry, and the soundtracks of Italian film Westerns.
