Album Review

International contemporary instrumental (new age) superstar Yiannis Hrysomallis' first album of new studio material since 2003’s Ethnicity finds the self-taught Greek composer returning to his instrumental roots, crafting a 15-track onslaught of blistering calm that will appeal to fans of his mid-'90s heyday. Like Ethnicity, 2011’s Truth of Touch is built on a foundation of international rhythms, but Yanni's understated phrases and keen melodic sense help to keep the project squarely in the accessible zone. Devoid of any epics (the longest track is just over five minutes), Truth of Touch is a largely instrumental (“the operatic “O Luce Che Brilla Nell'oscurità” features a male tenor lead) pop record that deftly weaves in heavily cinematic (the dreamy title cut sounds like an extension of Toto and Brian Eno's “Prophecy Theme” from David Lynch's Dune) vistas laced with smooth jazz and tribal rhythms. It may not break any new ground for the pianist/composer, but it's hardly a step back, resulting in a fine return to form for the king of the Acropolis.

"Nine" - Wow

Yes, I love the bombast of the big concert Yanni, but I have also thoroughly enjoyed his tight studio albums. The entire detour into "voice" really was lost on me and seemed another of his somewhat treadworn recycling. This album finally seems to be coming back to the music Yanni is blessed to share with us. At the moment I am COMPLETELY hooked on "Nine." The rhythm, the bass, the layers of complexity yet simpliciity - this is the Yanni that has been missing the past few years. Welcome back, Yanni!

Truth of Touch - Yanni

If you are already a fan of Yanni's music, note that this album showcases a more soulstirring side to Yanni. If you are not a fan of Yanni, seriously what are you waiting for? This guy is the greatest composer of our generation. The complexity and passion of his music rivals that of Shubert and Vivaldi (though he doesnt have the same sound). You can really see his passion for music in the great majority of his music, which is far more than you can say for most. He has yet to release an album that did not have at least one track that really pulled me into his mindset when he wrote it. Voyage is getting a great deal of praise, and for good reason, the impact this song has is fantastically exicuted. If you have yet to see this man in concert, I highly suggest it as he never disapoints (plus the musicians he brings in always play a different twist on his music which is phenominal to listen to.

Truth of Touch

Have been Yanni's fan for years, and have been waiting for his new performance all along. Love love this one, emotionally touching as Yanni's have always been.

Genre: New Age

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

Of the artists who rose to popularity as part of the new age music boom of the 1980s and '90s, few (if any) enjoyed greater or more lasting success than Yanni. Composing and performing instrumental music with a pronounced sense of drama, dynamics, and romanticism, Yanni broke through to a significantly larger audience than his peers, thanks to adult alternative radio airplay and a commanding performance style that attracted fans through frequent appearances on public television as well as world-wide...
