Exteme At Their Very Best!

"Waiting For The Punchline" is the real Extreme if you ask me. This album is great! The guitar tone Nuno Bettencourt achieves on this album is unreal. The songs are raw and still hold up in 2008, even though they're more than fourteen years old. Check out "There Is No God", "Cynical", "Hip Today", "No Respect" and "Unconditionally", which are my personal favorites.

Extreme at their rawest

If you're looking for the same Extreme that you were looking for on Pornograffitti or III Sides, look elsewhere. Not that either set is bad, but you'll notice that on Waiting For the Punchline, the slick production is gone. Instead, what you get is some very raw sounding rock and roll. "Midnight Express" is an instrumental that had been a standard fixture in their live set for years. "Hip Today" showcases the amazing Mike Mangini on drums. Gary Cherone runs his vocal chords rabid on "No Respect." As expected, Nuno Bettencourt ravages each of these tracks with incredible guitar fury. All in all, Waiting for the Punchline is one of the reminders of why I fell in love with rock and roll in the first place.

Does anyone notice that this is what audioslave was trying to sound like? Or that the RATM riffs were discovered here? Listen and you may cringe like me because, if this album was released now, it would be no. 1 critically acalaimed. Consequences of thinking ahead too soon, sorry Nuno. -Guitar

Extreme's music was never easy to classify, since it rarely confined itself to heavy metal, hard rock, or pop. The Massachusetts-based band formed in 1985; guitarist Nuno Bettencourt had already played in a local band with bassist Pat Badger, while singer Gary Cherone fronted his own group with drummer Paul Geary. The two bands eventually merged, and Cherone and Bettencourt formed a songwriting partnership that would soon place Extreme atop the Billboard charts, if only for a short period. Coupling...
