iTunes Review

John Legend sprang from an Ohio church choir, and The Roots are synonymous with Love City hip-hop, yet they both care deeply about making uncompromising, introspective soul music with an intellectual bent. And when the two acts collaborate, the result is unequivocally hot — think “The Fire” from The Roots’ How I Got Over. They’ve again joined forces for the greater good, with a concisely edited set of covers of socially conscious songs from the ’60s and ’70s, such as “Hard Times” and “Our Generation.”

The album also features a digital booklet, the track "Shine (Waiting for 'Superman' Version)", and bonus live performances of “Wake Up Everybody” feat. Black Thought and “Compared To What," as well as a live in-studio interview with John Legend and The Roots.

2010 Music

Real Music in 2010???
Get outta here!
This is nice....real nice!

The Best of Both Worlds... FINALLY

Forget about the fact that it's the Legendary Roots Crew (the Greatest Live Hip-Hop band to ever exist), and forget that it's John Legend. It's BOTH of them on one great album. What the hell more can you ask for?!?!?! Anyone who's seen the Roots LIVE knows what I'm talking about!!! And John Legend... his name speaks for itself... he's a true legend in the R&B world. Stop expecting to hear nonsense over crazy, futuristic beats (the steady stream of nonsense that's out there now) and take a good listen to what REAL MUSIC is supposed to sound like!!! This is not your Jay-Z/R. Kelly album full of garbage and sexual undertones... It's the ROOTS and JOHN LEGEND combined on one positively phenomenal album... truly what the world needs now!!! I'm glad I'm able to witness this collaboration and consume myself in both of their musical goodnesses.

i could never have called this

no offense to kanye west but if john knows what's good for him i would stick close to questlove's vision. he understands the climate a soul singer needs. this is a shoo in for the next grammy awards

Grammy- and Academy Award-winning R&B singer, songwriter, and pianist John Legend, born John Stephens, was a child prodigy who grew up in Ohio, where he began singing gospel and playing piano at the age of five. Stephens left his home state at 16 to attend college in Philadelphia, and it was there that he first found a larger audience. Not yet out of his teens, Stephens was tapped to play piano on Lauryn Hill's "Everything Is Everything," a Top 40 hit for the Fugees member's 1998 album The Miseducation...
