iTunes Review

An up-and-coming emcee representing for Akron, Ohio, Swoope is part of the High Society collective and signed to Collision Records. He's already dropped several independent projects (Zoo, Applause Vol. 1, Spring Fling), setting the stage for his “official” debut album, Wake Up. Very influenced by Kanye and Drake, his songs are heavy on melodrama and introspective storytelling, preferring to rhyme about his life and faith rather than fake thug/kingpin fairytales. Musically he keeps listeners on their toes, mixing up genres with instrumentation that varies from simple, classically minded pianos to crunchy distorted electronics and anthemic drum bashing. His Christian beliefs are on display throughout but never get too in your face, while his meandering flow keeps things interesting over the course of 15 tracks. Lots of breathy guest singers provide the hooks, but Swoope's verses are really the stars of the show. "Ideality," "No Impostors," and "Aesthetic/Beautiful Rise Prelude" are standouts.

Wake Up

In a time when most rappers have forgotten that the word "substance" is in the dictionary and many Christian Hip Hop artists are going for the "mainstream" sound, Swoope has released one of the greatest Hip Hop albums of the new millennium. With Swoope's creativity, production, and lyricism rivaling the epic proportions of Kanye West in his My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, Swoope has reaffirmed my belief in the power of H.E.R. (Hip Hop in its Essence and Real). Wake Up has the makings of an instant classic Hip Hop album. Wake Up compounds rich and diverse sounds upon one another to add to the beauty of Swoope's lyrical poetry. Assisted on four songs by Christon Gray (a man whose voice rivals Frank Ocean's), one song by Eshon Burgundy (a rapper whose lyricism and passion never fails to astound), and two songs by Sho Baraka (a rapper whose social conscience, intelligence and rapping abilites rival Lupe Fiasco's), Swoope has provided us with a true masterpiece. And perhaps that was his intention: Destroying the Beautiful and Dark Twisted Fantasies of this life by calling us to Wake Up.

I came out of hibernation early for this.

Swoope continues to grow more and more with every song he releases and/or is featured on.

This album is no exception.

Strong concept is pulled all the way through and executed flawlessly. His wordplay is, by far, the most creative I have ever heard. His pianist skills complement the dynamic lyricism and production effortlessly. His delivery hits you hard but yet you continue to ask for more.

Most of all, it is challenging, encouraging, and positive Hip-Hop that glorifies God. What more can you ask for?

This is a classic! Metaphors and similes for day... One of my new favorites. Every Track goes. If you only have $10 to your name buy this album! God bless
