iTunes Review

Best known for their chart-topping 1993 hit single "Slam," New York City's Onyx got their start in the late '80s in the Queens neighborhood of Jamaica. Discovered by Jam Master Jay, the group (Sticky Fingaz, Fredro Starr, and Sonny Steeza) had an explosive, hyperactive style, mixing extreme violence with both humor and social commentary. Their first full-length, Bacdafucup, easily went platinum, and they went on to release four more albums over the next 10 years. Their fame would dim in the '00s, but they kept busy with various tours, solo albums, guest appearances, acting careers, and indie compilation projects (two volumes of Cold Case Files). On Wakedafucup, the group's first studio album since 2003's Triggernometry, they sound as good as ever, hooking up with the German production crew Snowgoons, who provide them with a gang of appropriately hardcore beats. Their sound may be too roughneck for today's younger emo-rap fans, but older heads are definitely in for a treat. Guests include Cormega, Papoose, Reks, A$AP Ferg, and Sean Price; don't miss "We Don't F*ckin Care," "The Tunnel," "Dirty Cops," and "Buc Buc."

Back to the basics

GREATTTTT ALBUM, their best album since Bacdafucup. Brings you back to the essence of hip hop back in the 90's. This album is worth every $, support the artist. Rappers and groups come and go, these guys never left.

Hardcore hip hop is back!

Not a bad song on the album! I feel like I'm an angry teen in the 1990s again! And I absolutely love it! If you are a fan of early/mid 90s hardcore east coast hip hop, this will scratch the itch you've had for the past 20 years. Absolutely incredible; Sticky Fingaz is amazing as usual and Fredro Starr does his best rhyming since "Last Dayz". A must-have!!

Hard white..

Straight up the best album this year onyx still holding it down 4 real hip hop.... it ain't dead yet RAW

Biography

Formed: 1990 in Queens, New York, NY

Genre: Hip-Hop/Rap

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Onyx's shouting, in-your-face brand of high-volume rapping proved to be more at home in the slam pit than on the dancefloor and brought the rap quartet instant chart success. Originally formed in Queens, NY, during 1990, the members of Onyx (Fredro Starr, Sticky Fingaz, Big DS, and DJ Suave Sonny Caeser) met while working as barbers. The band honed their rhyming skills and act by performing at local clubs, which eventually gained the attention of Run-D.M.C.'s Jam Master Jay, who signed the group...
