Remarkable Collaboration

While I have only heard this one song, I see the potential for the group work. The Roots represent one of the most remarkable groove bands of the past twenty years. Their ability to shape a song and design the music really reveals the kind of musical genius this group of men demonstrate. Elvis Costello has for years tried to grapple with similar sound forms and this connection may bring out the best of all of these human beings. Cannot wait to hear the competed album.

A Little Disappointed

I have to admit, though I'm a long time EC fan and own every single one of his albums, I expected to hear NEW music, but the majority of this is recycled Costello material. More than half of the lyrics are old EC lyrics, and believe me, I know all of his lyrics by heart. It just seems a little lazy to me. The critics calling this "groundbreaking" must not be very familiar with the words of his songs throughout his career. It's almost as if The Roots did an EC tribute/sample album with EC singing. I just had higher expectations.

No Black Thought?

If you're looking for an Elvis Costello "remix" album, this is excellent. Great collection of songs however, I anticipated an album more like 2012's "Wake Up". The Roots are as inventive as ever musically, but this shouldn't be billed as a Roots album; it's missing 50% of the equation.

A cursory listen to My Aim Is True proves that the main connection that Costello had with the punks was his unbridled passion; he tore through rock's back pages taking whatever he wanted, as well as borrowing from country, Tin Pan Alley pop, reggae, and many other musical genres. Over his career, that musical eclecticism distinguished his records as much as his...
