An Overlooked Masterpiece

This album is a showcase of some of the biggest modern jazz greats--many of them now famous in their own right (Joshua Redman, for example)--playing a tremendous playlist of tremendous music. It is ear-shattering, jarring, and fantastic, and all the musicians on the album are virtuosic on their respective instruments. One stand-out track is "Monk in Soweto"; written by Hotep Idris Galeta, a South African pianist-extrodinaire, the piece has ferocious energy in its stirring, chaotic head. "Mario Pavone - Toulon Days" is a must buy for any modern jazz fan.

Adventurous jazz bassist and composer Mario Pavone became increasingly active in NY jazz for several decades starting in the 1970s. Pavone is perhaps best known for his tenure as bassist in the Thomas Chapin Trio, and a frequent collaborator of Anthony Braxton's, as well as for his own dates as a leader. Pavone got a relatively late start playing the bass, picking up the instrument in the early '60s at the age of 24. He took lessons from Bertram Turetzky and, after getting his engineering degree...
