Album Review

Wallpaper is a side-project for members of New Bad Things, a band whose low-fi and utterly casual approach to bashing pop tunes is a pretty wonderful thing. Wallpaper has the same dimly recorded feel and loose melodicism, but applies them in a much more low-key environment — New Bad Things' tinny grooves and reckless pop enthusiasm are traded for a sound that's less organic, more oddly constructed, and entirely appealing. The occasional groove appears ("High Roller"), but the album's real interest lies in listening as off-kilter pop formats crop up on each new track — not all of them work, but the majority manage to surprise the listener by winding up hugely appealing despite their apparent oddity. This sort of low-fi pop experimentalism has worked for a great number of other indie projects, and it certainly works for Wallpaper — some of their constructions actually rival the work of New Bad Things, which is quite an achievement.

Damn Good

Eric Frederick (of facing new york/wallpaper) is a genius. This e.p. is a nice transition for him into the electronic/dance music scene considering Facing New York is more progressive, experimental rock. Whatever music you're into, you can most liklely find a small piece of this album to listen to over and over again. Watch out for live shows in the bay, they're incredible.

Wallpaper. is seriously like my new favorite! They're coming out with a new CD sometime this month [may `o7'] &&it sounds pretty good, I love the eclectic-ness of them, I love "Fat Money".

This album is unlike anything I have come across since I first heard it all those years ago. Perhaps it is intended to be stupid or a parody but for me the strange low fi sounds paired with the strange broken lyrics all just line up to make something oddly perfect. This album holds a special place in my heart and I am understanding but disappointed in this artist's later work. I got you though; you want mass appeal.

Led by Oakland, California native Ricky Reed, Wallpaper. fuses hip-hop, pop, and dance music in a carefree, occasionally pointed fashion. After a pair of EPs in 2006 and in 2008, the first Wallpaper. album, Doodoo Face, was released in 2009 on Eenie Meenie. Reed dished out lighthearted and Auto-Tune-treated lyrics about partying over productions that seemed equally inspired by '80s electro-pop and contemporary mainstream rap. #STUPiDFACEDD (2011) followed on Hype Music in a similar manner.
