iTunes Review

Back in the ‘70s, the vibraphonist Gary Burton led a distinctive band that included bassist Steve Swallow and a young guitarist named Pat Metheny. In 2005, the three musicians got together to play a show at the Montreal Jazz Festival — with Metheny regular Antonio Sanchez on drums — and they have continued to tour since then. Quartet Live! captures the foursome at a 2007 performance at Yoshi’s, a well-known club in Oakland, California. The group revisits a number of original compositions along with pieces associated with the vibraphone master. “Sea Journey,” which Chick Corea wrote for Burton’s band, displays the pianist’s gift for melody and groove. The composer and pianist Carla Bley also penned pieces for Burton; here she is represented by a mellow “Olhos de Gato” and by “Syndrome,” which contains hints of country and fusion. On “Walter L,” Burton goes bluesy and Metheny unleashes a dirty rock solo, while Duke Ellington’s “Fleurette Africaine” brings out the group’s quiet side. Quartet Live! closes with a 13-minute version of Metheny’s “Question and Answer;” Sanchez’s energetic solo is outstanding.

Amazing Works by Amazing Musicians

Another first class performance for Pat Metheny as well as the rest of the all star quartet. Gary Burton drives the lead on this album taking the listener on a musical journey through classics from a variety of artist including Metheny, Burton, Jarrett, Corea and more. In my opinion Missouri Uncompromised is as beautiful as it has ever been. I was so happy to see Pat revisit such a classic of his own works here and reinvent it with this amazing quartet. Sea Journey also starts the album off with a real eye opening solo from Swallow who's tone on this album is amazing. As good as it gets......

Outstanding!

This much-anticipated quartet gathering, the New Quartet Live Album with Burton, Metheny, Swallow and Sanchez, is simply great! I love the flow of songs and the 4 sound wonderful together and sport-on. Pat has 3 songs; Gary has 1 song, as does Chick Corea - Neville Potter, Keith Jarrett and Duke Ellington. Carla Bley has 2 songs, as does Steve Swallow. Altogether there are 11 songs and IMO, Missouri Uncompromised is Super as is Little African Flower. The Album ends with Question and Answer and @ 13:02 in Length it is really performed smoking Hot! Pat only play his guitar synth on Q & A and think it cap off the album really well and in my view, he sensitively plays his guitar synth to the scale of Yoshi's. The sound quality is excellent and the album was recorded in June of 2007 at Yoshi’s in Oakland, CA. This new and hot Quartet Live album is highly recommended and I give it 5 Stars!

Love it...Metheny with Vibraphones Works!

I was very cautious with this one- Thinking a whole set with Vibraphones would be too much. I was Wrong! I downloaded Olhos and B&G first only to purchase the whole disc after just a listen. Burton is a master of his craft and really adds a haunting cool vibe to all these tunes. I love Metheny Live and these guys are stellar together sounding like they have been playing as a unit forever. I usually find my self not enjoying the more traditional style tunes from Pat. But, this time around I loved every bit of it! To each his own when it comes to Metheny- But these are the highlights for me that make the Metheny playlist. Q&A, Fleurette, Missouri, Sea Journey, Olhos, Coral, and B&G. A Must have...

One of the two great vibraphonists to emerge in the 1960s (along with Bobby Hutcherson), Gary Burton's remarkable four-mallet technique (best displayed on an unaccompanied version of "No More Blues" from 1971) can make him sound like two or three players at once. He recorded in a wide variety of settings and always sounds distinctive. Self-taught on vibes, Burton made his recording debut with country guitarist Hank Garland when he was 17, started recording regularly for RCA in 1961, and toured with...
