iTunes Editors’ Notes

Bill Evans and Tony Bennett, masters of their respective crafts, make for an interesting pairing. The extroverted Bennett has a booming voice and an outgoing style, while Evans’s piano playing is noted for its reflective lyricism. The two musicians liked each other’s work, and in the mid-‘70s they recorded two LPs, The Tony Bennett/Bill Evans Album and Together Again. 2009’s The Complete Tony Bennett/Bill Evans Recordings includes those two albums, a couple of bonus tracks, and twenty alternate takes. Both singer and pianist share the spotlight. The opener, “Young and Foolish,” a song from the ‘50s musical, Plain and Fancy, immediately establishes the high quality of the collaboration. Bennett will break your heart with this wistful look back at youth, and Evans’s sensitive touch is equally affecting. There are several standouts, including two tracks — the devastating “The Two Lonely People” and the subtle, yet intense “You Must Believe In Spring”— that originally appeared on Together Again. This set is a stone-cold classic.

Customer Reviews

Amazing music from two masters. The audio quality is excellent. Perfect music to share with the one you love.

This is a beautiful album! Jazz vocal and accompaniment does no get much better than this. Bennett and Evans both at their prime, both lyrical genuises.

The only musician that Frank Sinatra ever listened to, and that was because Franks mom loved Tony. Its obvious why the man has lasted for so long... He is pure class and has excellent range and depth. Bill is in perfect form and the two giants mesh for pure perfection. EXCELLENT.

Tony Bennett's career has enjoyed three distinct phases, each of them very successful. In the early '50s, he scored a series of major hits that made him one of the most popular recording artists of the time. In the early '60s, he mounted a comeback as more of an adult-album seller. And from the mid-'80s on, he achieved renewed popularity with generations of listeners who hadn't been born when he first appeared. This, however, defines Bennett more in terms of marketing than music. He would probably...
