Fantastic minimalist debut... Just wish it was released earlier

Early Nyman - great material here

As with other early Nyman recordings, there is experimentation with forms that later became his signature sound. There are pieces with improvisation, electric guitar or synthesizers, things that Nyman avoided in the future.

The real treasure of this album is "Bird Anthem", a driving work with choral singing more like a work from Ennio Morricone than later Nyman vocal compositions. In RE Don Giovanni, Secondary Treat and Bird List Song are classic Nyman Band material with the thumping bass beat although this version of Bird List Song has an electric guitar part and it fades out instead of ending. M-Work is unusual in that it shifts from typical Nyman band sounds to bare synth arpeggios to Phillip Glass sounding sections. Waltz has the surprising participation of avant garde sax titans Evan Parker and Peter Brontzman. This piece is also unusual in Nyman's work and represents a direction he chose not to investigate further.

The recording is like the later Kiss And Other Movements in that the sound is skewed to the treble.

Foundation study...

Nyman reinvents himself, his music and rewrites music history with every record. This, the first, is where the equation began. This music is well thought out and intelligent. Why? Because that's what he does and that's how he does it.

Born in London on March 23, 1944, he studied at the Royal Academy of Music and King's College, London, under communist composer Alan Bush and Thurston Dart, a musicologist specializing in the English Baroque. Under Dart's tutelage, Nyman was introduced to 16th- and 17th-century English...
