iTunes Editors’ Notes

Present Tense—the fourth album by the Cumbrian, U.K., quartet Wild Beasts—took nearly a year away from touring to rightfully conceive. Written in London and recorded at Konk Studios in London and The Distillery in Bath, with coproducers Lexx (Arcade Fire, Madonna) and Brian Eno protegé Leo Abrahams, the album achieves a level of consistency and emotional richness that was often harder to unscramble in Wild Beasts' angst-ridden early works. But Hayden Thorpe looks to learn more about himself with each album, taking his fans with him. The opener and debut single, “Wanderlust,” features plenty of daring sounds and a confrontational stance: “Don’t confuse me with someone who gives a ****.” But songs like “Pregnant Pause,” “Mecca,” and “Daughters” tread closer to a Scott Walker/Talk Talk vibe, where much goes on under the surface. Second vocalist Tom Fleming provides a steadying counterpoint. The easy accessibility of “A Simple Beautiful Truth” is something that their earlier selves never would have allowed but clearly should have, since every story has a moment of reflection—and you catch more fans with honey.

Cant Wait

Just discovered this band a couple weeks ago and love them. Just great music and I'm excited. The Fun Powder Plot is my favorite song from their old stuff hope this lives up to my expectations

Couldn't have come soon enough

To the chaps who've already posted reviews-- the past tense of throw is threw, the name of the band is Wild Beasts and if you just discovered them 3 weeks ago perhaps you're not the best authority to consult when it comes to them. More importantly Present Tense is brilliant.

Left Wanting More

I'm a long time Wild Beasts fan, and have enjoyed their music and evolution. Have to say that I was a bit disappointed by Present Tense. Perhaps it was the strength of the 'Wanderlust' single that raised my expectations- it's one of their best songs. The rest of the album is a bit lackluster though and if I wasn't a fan, I can't see how this would be compelling. A Simple Beautiful Truth is another bright spot, but the rest of the album feels restrained and tends to blend together. The Wanderlust remixes are far too esoteric for me; don't see how they compliment or energize the original at all.
