Album Review

Detroit rapper Obie Trice is widely known as a protégé of controversial hip-hop superstar Eminem. With appearances on Em's 8 Mile soundtrack and a debut album, Cheers, in the can, Trice reaches for the brass ring on the follow-up, Second Round's on Me. And he gets off to a brilliant start with lead-off single "Since They Wanna Know." Built out of the powerhouse hometown hard-rock of Power of Zeus's 1970 hitter "It Couldn't Be Me," the track became the unofficial theme song of the third season of HBO's series Entourage, and was subsequently heard by millions. Leaning heavily on a mid-paced, paranoid gangsta rap production style, evidenced on tracks like "They Wanna Kill Me" and "Snitch" (a duet with Akon), Trice stakes his claim as a tough, swaggering performer whose self-awareness never undermines his hard, ghetto edge., Rovi

Obie Trice is the most underrated rapper of modern time. His debut, Cheers, was a classic debut. It was better than Eminems debut, and still it was not in the mainstream. His follow-up, Second Rounds On Me, is even better. Cry Now is clearly the best track of 2006, and Snitch shows Obies great storytelling ability. Everywhere I Go, is a banger. You can bump it in your car, your room, or your party. The only negative with this album is that some of the songs are a little short, but Obies lyrics makes up for it. After a prolonged one year wait, the album of the year is here. Its sad that this wont get the attention it deserves, due to bootlegging. Obie is one breakthrough hit away from being considered one of the greatest rappers of all time. The top tracks are: Cry Now, Snitch, Ballad of Obie Trice, Mama, Everywhere I Go

Great Lyrics, Great Beats, Great Flow: Classic

Such a good album, except it doesnt say that 12 features nate dogg, 13 & 15 feature Trey Songz and 17 features 50 cent. Every song is amazing, download the album, give obie some money for putting forth such a good album.... GET HIM PLATINUM!!!

Second Rounds On Me-Obie Trice

Debut Cheers was an enjoyable album, and three years later, Obie is back. After being shot two times, one to the head, he has a lot darker feel on his sophomore disc. Wake Up: Em's easy flowing production is perfect and it's all eyes on Trice. Lyrically his flow is great and he smoothly spits for 2:30 and then a solid hook. 3.5/5 Violent: Great production, definitely violent hook, Obie rides the beat nicely. 4/5 Wanna Know: "It Couldn't Be Me" sample is heavily used, as Obie is kind of drowned out by the production. It's a solid track though. 3.5/5 Lay Down: Em's production here is great, as the uptempo high intensity track is helped by Obie's paranoid pissed off flow. Amazing lyrically with a hard hitting hook. 4.5/5 Snitch: Akon's solid production is fitting and it's another Akon collab ending into hit material. Great hook, Obie fits as well. 4.5/5 Cry Now: Soulful upbeat production similar to "Wanna Know", good track. 3.5/5 Ballad Of Obie Trice: With a action packed beginning, Em slows it down with guitar and claps as Obie describes his life. One of my favorites. 4.5/5 Jamaican Girl: Em's production is different from his usual dark intense nature and has fun with it. Brick & Lace add the jamaican flavor and Trice's description lyrically is great. Nice club track here. 4/5 Kill Me A Mutha: Wasn't feelin the beat, skipper. 2.5/5 Out Of State: Nice production, upbeat as Obie rides the beat well. 3.5/5 All Of My Life: Some west coast feel here, Trell's bouncy Cali feel is great and even better with Nate Dogg's hook. Nice track. 3.5/5 Ghetto: Trey's hook is decent, track isn't bad but not Obie's top. Good track nonetheless. 3/5 There They Go: Em, Big Herk and Trick Trick join on this average track. 3/5 Mama: Jonathon Rotem's soulful feel good production is assisted by Trey Songz wonderful hook. Great horns as Obie's rhymes fit nicely. 4/5 24's: Decent track, possible skipper, it wasn't too good. 2.5/5 Everywhere I Go: Great Em production similar to "Ballad Of Obie Trice" guitar wise in the beginning, but turns into a bouncy banger that works well with 50's guest spot. 4.5/5 Obie Story: Rotem's feel good production is evident here with a great piano line as Obie reflects on childhood. 5/5 Obie's second album is well done, to me much better than his debut. Due to the incident of being shot, he seems a lot more focused, with minimal guests on producing and rapping. Em handles a bunch of beats, and they are that intense dark feel that is great as the lyrical ability of Obie shines. Numerous hooks are solid and towards the end helped by Trey Songz, Nate Dogg and 50. "Everywhere I Go" is hot, "Violent" and "Lay Down" are intense, as west coast "All Of My Life" works with "Mama", "Ballad Of Obie Trice" and "Obie Story" work as sentimental cuts. Obie Trice went from no one to someone in the rap world quickly when Eminem signed him to Shady Records and executive produced his debut. Born on the west side of Detroit in the Schoolcraft and Greenfield area, Trice began his rap career humbly. He dropped out of Cooley High School in the early '90s and began making ends meet, which wasn't too easy in the cold, abandoned streets of Detroit. His turning point came in 1998 with the birth of his daughter, Kobie. Shortly afterward, he took note of Eminem's...
