EDITORS’ NOTES

In 2007, renowned English children’s author Michael Morpurgo expressed doubts about the very notion of London stage producers adapting his 1982 novel about the odyssey of a Devon farm horse sold into the British cavalry during WWI. Yet just four years later, the unlikely show had become not only a Broadway success honored with five Tony Awards (including Best Play) but a lavish, Steven Spielberg–directed Hollywood film translation as well. Given the stage production’s uniquely equine point of view, Adrian Sutton’s elegiac orchestral score and the stark, evocative songs of veteran English folk musician John Tams form crucial but ever-subtle dramatic underpinnings to the unlikely Broadway triumph. Melancholy yet not cloying, the understated grace of Sutton’s and Tams’ musical collaboration evokes the history and travails of a century past, effectively bridging them with a modern era all too familiar with its own horrors of war.

Such an amazing play, one of my favorites actually.. BUT...

whyisitimpossibletofindanickn,

when I saw the play on Broadway, a woman was singing all of the songs, and I was really looking forward to listening to her on the soundtrack. But instead its a man. He's fine, but I LOVE the woman.

Amazing piece of theatre
