Album Review

A lengthy compilation of demos, unreleased tracks, and piano solos previously reserved for family members, and a pleasant surprise indeed. Despite some forgettable '80s synth schlock on "Steamhole Dance" and "Warmongers," most of the album consists of intimate recordings like the charmingly creaky old piano on "The Mountain" and the deathbed consolation of "Piece for Granny." Arcana from Journey to the Center of the Earth also makes a strong showing here — it's a must-have for fans of that album. There's a mildly entertaining demo of "The Battle"; more of interest are the two wry encores from the Journey to the Center of the Earth concert, which show the orchestra and Wakeman trading off variations on advertising jingles, much to the crowd's amusement. But recorders beware: the running times listed in the liner notes are completely wrong.
