iTunes Review

Warpaint’s sessions for Rough Trade culminate in this release, which includes five audio selections and one video. These are live-in-the-studio versions of songs from the band's 2010 debut album, The Fool, save for the two opening songs. This version of “Billie Holiday” (originally from Warpaint's 2009 Beautiful Corpse EP) plays nearly identically, except here the vocal performances are more up close and personal; it sounds like the female quartet is giving the listener a private serenade. “Burgundy” resonates clearer than its original counterpart, with crisper singing and a minimal approach making a more haunting rendition. “Majesty” plays with fewer bells and whistles than the album version, but what the song lacks in digital effects it makes up with complex vocal arrangements and intimacy. This version of “Composure” puts the peripheral backing vocals upfront before the song shifts gears, resonating with mysterious post-goth pop reminiscent of the first two This Mortal Coil albums.

Sossamon left due to conflicts with her acting schedule and was replaced by Stella Mozgawa. With a dedicated lineup, the band began to experiment with murky spaciousness and stripped-down arrangements, and gained the attention of former Red Hot Chili Peppers...
