iTunes Review

Released in advance of Gucci Mane’s second major-label full-length (The State vs. Radric Davis), Wasted: The Prequel brings together six songs drawn from the astonishing string of mixtapes Gucci released in 2008 and 2009. The title song is magnificent: a cyclical climax of synths blend seamlessly into the rhymes of Gucci and his lieutenant, OJ Da Juiceman. Their shape shifting, single-syllable rhyme schemes create their own kinetic rhythm, and over the course of the song it seems that the rappers don’t rhyme over the beat, but in fact, into the beat. The rest of the mixtape is just as good, if slightly less energetic. “She Got a Friend” and “I’m a Dog” pursue the same vision of feverish sex that made a huge hit out of “Freaky Gurl.” In “Shirt Off” and “Photoshoot” Gucci shows his ability to mine the potential of single words and phrases. “Bricks” closes things out in fine fashion. The song melts together the wheeze of church organ and the creepy tick of a music box melody, and over that abnormal backdrop Gucci paints a fresco of life on the corner.
