Editors’ Notes

Featuring first-generation hardcore punk singer Keith Morris, OFF! deliver the goods like it’s 1981. Morris, once the singer for Black Flag and Circle Jerks, simply lets loose with the passionate cries and yelps that his teenaged self surely never expected he'd still be doing so well. The second OFF! album, Wasted Years, was self-recorded in their practice space to 8-track 1/2-inch tape; it reels off 16 songs (17 songs with the bonus track “In Your Arms”) in less time than it takes to change the oil on an old El Camino. Dimitri Coats nails the gritty guitar tone and aggressive chug that makes a punk band rock, while Steven McDonald’s bass and Mario Rubalcaba’s drums form a relentless rhythm section. Fans of Circle Jerks’ Group Sex or simply the self-titled first OFF! album and subsequent EP will be plenty satisfied with this uncompromising set. “Void You Out” sets the nasty tone, and they’re off.

Wasted Years

OFF! is back with some wicked hardcore punk. Wasted Years is their best album to date with more complex riffs and socially aware lyrics. You can't go wrong with this. This is just as great as early Black Flag or the Circle Jerks.

test it against the classics of the genre

Be glad they’re still excited about the program they started and wanting to push forward. Retro? No. Reactionary? Yes. This is what a punch to the gut of Timberlake and every other mall-manager-contrived boy-band-survivor sounds like. A cinder block dropped from the roof of a skyscraper. Vital and urgently necessary in the middle of a pop revival.

Kidnergarteners, go home; the big boys are playing!

Aeon Wedbush writes the vocals are "amatuer at best". When you're finsihed creaming over the new Charlotte OC ep, go read some history on OFF! - specifically, Keith Morris. As a founding member not just of Black Flag, but of early American hardcore, Morris' vocals are anything but amatuer; maybe it's not your style (again, I refer back to your "solid" review of Charlotte OC), but he certainly is no amatuer.

And I couldn't help but appreciate the irony of you calling this "lazy" when all your reviews rely on "songs have zero identity".

I can't even offer you a heartfelt "Nice try!"
