Reseña de álbum

Also made available domestically at one time by the defunct Black Hawk label, this superior Abdullah Ibrahim recording features the pianist/composer with a very strong septet. Such superior musicians as tenor saxophonist Ricky Ford, altoist Carlos Ward, baritonist Charles Davis, and trombonist Dick Griffin are heard at their most creative and emotional on these eight Ibrahim originals. Many of the melodies (particularly "Mandela," "Song for Sathima," "Water From an Ancient Well," and the beautiful "The Wedding") are among Ibrahim's finest compositions.

Dollar Brand

This guy is mesmerizing. This album is peaceful and very spiritual. I have followed his career a long time, have seen him in concert, and he's still a big favorite of mine for many years. He used to be known as Dollar Brand and made a very good recording with Buddy Tate. Duke Ellington liked him a lot too. He puts on a wonderful show live if you ever get the chance to see him, do it. All his albums have merit.

Words do it no justice

Shades of Ellington, Monk, Coltrane, and South Africa with Ibrahim's masterful piano playing and one of the best arranged jazz ensembles I've ever heard.

I'm a major jazz fan with many albums that appear on a lot of "greatest jazz" lists by fans and critics. Somehow this remarkable album doesn't show up on many of those "greatest jazz" lists, but it should.

I've had this album for a little more than a month and it's quickly becoming one of my all time favorites.

Since attracting international acclaim as a member of the Jazz Epistles, one of South Africa's first jazz bands, Ibrahim has continued to explore new ground with his imaginative playing.
