Album Review

Wavelab is the rechristened and vastly reworked version of the duo's 1997 Wavelab Performance debut. Ostensibly done to update the sound quality of what had been an ultra-indie project two years prior for a "proper" European release, it also served as one of two discs to simultaneously make their Chicago-based indie Carrot Top Records debuts. The disc is peppered with nods to the group's French origins and is more straightforward and poppy when contrasted to the band's self-titled release, coming off like guitar-intensive exotic lounge music a good percentage of the time. The truly avant pop stylings of Calexico, whose studio Wavelab was recorded at and whose John Convertino added instrumentation to the disc, would come out later. ~ Brian O'Neill, Rovi
