Album Review

Although this double-length live set includes only two of three surviving Queen members (guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor, with Free/Bad Company singer Paul Rodgers providing lead vocals), Return of the Champions offers some sharply executed renditions of Queen hits, as well as a few gems from Rodgers' former bands. Rodgers, wisely, doesn't attempt to replicate the flamboyant charm of Freddie Mercury. Instead, he applies his gritty, hard rock-honed vocals to the group's heavier tunes, most notably the riff-happy "Tie Your Mother Down" and the automotive power ballad "I'm in Love with My Car." May is in top form here, particularly on his seven-minute solo, proving that he's still capable of the six-string pyrotechnics that made him a guitar hero.

Customer Reviews

I have been a Queen fan since their first album came out. If you love Queen, you can either never see or hear them again or go with this version! Paul Rodgers is the best choice available in the world to sing. Paul Rodgers was FREDDY MERCURY'S HERO growing up (Free and Bad Company). They knew each other well. I saw this band when they toured and it was the ultimate tribute to Freddy. I have seen Queen 12 times and this concert was right up there with the rest. Buy this and don't listen to the comments being made by people who do not even know who the great Paul Rodgers is!

Paul Rodgers Rocks

Ok, baddc, just to set the record straight, Paul doesn't sing Bohemian Rhapsody in concert or on this album...they intro the song but it's Freddy on the big screen playing piano at a live concert it's Freddy you hear on this album for that song. Secondly, for all you nay sayers, Paul Rodgers rocks fronting this band live...I saw them in Vegas and it was hands down the best rock concert I have ever seen. Paul is a veteran rocker with a great voice that fits most every Queen song to a T. My only regret is that they did not include Bad of the highlights of the show was Paul playing the BC intro on a red piano and singing his trademark song. Bummer.

Queen Purists

Cmon you purist, the point is not to replace Freddy Mercury.I love Queen and their music, this is a good disc of Queen originals.Paul Rodgers of Bad Company Fame, does a great job of filling large shoes. The original Queen songs and their sound are classic. Now is the time to get the songs out for a new generation, fans can hear this, then discover the original discs. Not to mention Queen was a great touring band, I for one can't wait to hear these great songs on the road again. You purist want to sit there at th FM shrine and play the old discs over and over. I believe this is a tribute to Freddy, and the great work he accomplished, the SONGS were meant to be in the public ear.besides is it fair to Brian May(amazing guitarist) to never play the classics he help create. I feel Freddy Mercury is looking down smiling at the revival of Queens music and the legacy he and the Band created.
