iTunes Review

The long-awaited follow-up to Gavin DeGraw's debut album Chariot furthers his foray into modern blue eyed soul. "In Love With A Girl" opens the album with grungy guitar riffs and flowing melodies before "Next To Me (Wait A Minute Sister)" bounces in with a smooth stride, sounding a little like a cross between Jason Mraz and Rob Thomas. The sing-along melodies and emotionally charged lyrics of infidelity in "Cheated On Me" makes for an obvious choice in a radio single. "Young Love" is a standout ballad with a sparseness that allows you to really hear the deep, rich tone in DeGraw's vocal timbre, and "Let It Go" is a similarly sentimental ballad where his smooth voice wraps around textured guitar distortion making for an effective sonic contrast. If you're looking for an instant party jam, "Medicate The Kids" should do the job with its head-bobbing verses and skyrocketing choruses where layered vocals build a wall of singing that sounds so good it's hard to remember that this song is railing against the pharmaceutical climate. The romantic and anthemic "We Belong Together" is a great way to book end this worthy return for DeGraw.

Doesn't Disappoint

This definitely doesn't disappoint. My favorites tend to lean on the slower songs because he really hits home. But then there's some rockers on here that get the job done all the same. These all include: In Love With a Girl - The first single that is as good (if not better in my opinion) as "I Don't Wanna Be" from his debut "Chariot" album. The chorus gets stuck in your head. 5/5 Next To Me (Wait A Minute Sister) - About trying to get this girl's attention but she won't give him the time of day. Not bad. 3.5/5 Cheated On Me - Self eplanatory by the title. About Gavin questioning himself and how he treated his past girls that may have possibly led them to cheat on him. "I am a jelous guy/I hear people talk/And isn't hard to belive/I think you cheated on me" Honestly, one of my least favorites on the album. Kinda cheesy. But listenable. 3/5 I Have You To Thank - I didn't really care for this at first but its a grower mostly because of the chorus. About being grateful to his girl because he feels she is the perfect girl for him. A little cheesy with the thankyous but like I said, it grows on you. 4/5 Cop Stop - About following through in a relationship despite failures in your past that may have you guarded. Gavin boasts "Baby I'm a Cop Stop!/Put up your hands and surrender to me" Catchy chorus and good lyrics once again. It grows on you after repeated listens. 4.5/5 Young Love - About the value of the beginning steps of a committed relationship. Lyrically, the chorus is amazing: "When the wine pours, we raise our cups/young love is sacrafice, young love is tough/ young love is innocent, young love is us." My favorite song on the album. 5/5 Medicate The Kids - The political song on the album. Basically about not falling under the government's medication... There's nothing you need to have get fed to you, go and explore your stance on your own. "Why don't you just back off of us before we go crazy/ No way. This ain't fair play. Just don't medicate me." Real surprised by this song when I first heard it. He rocks out a little bit. Strong message, great lyrics, this is a good one. 5/5 Relative - Another amazing message packed in a song. This is about just being content with the life you live. It's all relative so live it and live out loud. "Its all about the way we receive it/ How much we belive it/Depending on the life you lead if you lead it" Great one 5/5 She Holds A Key - Another slow gem on the album. About the girl holding the key to the guys heart as you could probably grasp from the title. Good one. 4.5/5 Untamed - About a girl that wants her guy to change to the point where he would no longer be himself. Gavin is against this saying that she should find someone else because they just must not be compatible. Important to stay true to yourself. "Born to run free and there's nobody taming me" Good one 4.5/5 Let It Go - About surrendering in love. "Let it go/settle into me/let it all go" A nice mellow song, not one of my favorites but not bad. 3.5/5 We Belong Together - The title is pretty self explanatory. An acoustic version of this was used for the movie Tristan and Isolde, so it was refreshing to see a reworked rockier version. Gives it more life and makes it more sincere. Great lyrics. One of my favorites. "We belong together/Like the open seas and shores/Wedded by the planet floors/We've all been spoken for" 5/5 Overall, a very solid well rounded album. Tracks 2 and 3 were the hardest to really digest at first but after a couple listens, they grew on me and the rest of the album is amazing. I actually enjoy this album more than the first. Definitely recommend this.

It's All About Love

Gavin DeGraw's latest self-titled album is everything you'd come to expect from the rock crooner; it's heartfelt, charming, and witty. The album's core topic is of love, the many ups and downs of a person's romantic life. The first single, “In Love With a Girl” is DeGraw's most aggressive song yet. It burns like the passion of a new flame thanks to catchy hooks and strong guitar riffs. “Cheated On Me” has Gavin singing over a melodic melody all the while crushed by his girlfriend's infidelity. The semi-acoustic “Young Love” gives the album a bittersweet touch as it rushes through the heart with melancholic lyrics and breezy sounds. Gavin does his best Bob Dylan impression on “Relative,” both his vocal gestures and comedic smarts pay homage to Dylan's style. Some may already be familiar with “We Belong Together,” a song that brings new meaning to longing love, but Gavin fine tunes it somewhat to give more of a raw edge and sturdy sound. This album is the journey of a man in love. Whether it's the joy of a first kiss or the devastating final moments of a first love, Gavin covers all the boundaries of his delicate soul. While he may be sensitive, the pulsing of his instruments and the strength of his voice keeps Gavin, if not anything else, emotionally rugged.

so disappointing!!!

how many times have you heard this story: 1) artist has huge breakout record with a fresh, original sound and amazing songs. 2) with a gigantic budget for the second record, artist and label recruit the "top" producers/mixers/etc without a thought to what is the RIGHT fit for the artist. 3) sophomore record is released with (comparatively) mediocre songs, an ultra-slick sound, and ZERO soul. here is where we find ourselves with Gavin DeGraw's self-titled second effort. while the production of howard benson is perfect for artists like Daughtry, Saosin, etc. when paired with the soulful shades of DeGraw the result falls flat. my recommendation? if you're interested in hearing how big money can water down brilliance, buy this record. otherwise, just buy another copy of "Chariot." Your ears will thank you.
