Album Review

If there has been something salutary about the evolution of the singer/songwriter genre over the years, it's been the way that those who work in the general vein have expanded its range beyond simply being solo guitar with arrangements, or painstaking re-creations of power pop bands jamming. Robert Gomez's 2009 album demonstrates this, with perhaps expected fragments of the art pop aesthetic from the Beach Boys meshing with crisp drum punches and even full-on rhythm attacks, which "Behind a Green Rosette" shows on this album in particular. If he doesn't really let himself be as completely loose as he could — there's definitely an air of a lost '70s wonderland present from the start — he has an ear for unsettled backgrounds and mood establishers, like the swirl of piercing piano and the roiling chug and tones starting "At Nemeli Bats," or the slow unfolding keyboard and skyscrape guitar howl that concludes "Open Your Eyes/Escape From." Gomez serenely whispers and soothes more than sings, with as much reverb on his voice as possible, but it suits the understated flow of work like "Hunting Song," all softly chugging but nervous tones, keyboards, and beats, and perhaps the most traditional guitar/vocal song, "A Paper Figurine" — at least before the spare funk break kicks in.

Beautiful !

This album is Robert's best effort to date. The music has layers of dense textures with heavy orchestral tones , perhaps Mr Gomez was listening to works of Gustav Mahler. Stand out tracks On this day, Hunting Song, Lock the door, Fireflies and A Paper Figurine featuring the gorgeous Manya Repnikova adding extra lushness to the vocals. Like in his previous albums, the voice is double tracked and almost of a whispering quality. Interestingly the album does not have a title track and the only time it gets a mention is at the begining of Fireflies. The title of the album and the cover art perhaps tell a different story. At times the drumming seems to be solitary, and overwhelms the musicianship. Nevertheless, this album is a gem that slowly grows with every listen defying the traditional notion of pop or rock music. Beautiful.

Fantastic Effort

I bought this album today after much anticipation. This album is fantastic. It really reminds me, in some vains, of Grizzly Bear, but not so experimental (and with a better singer). The melodies are masterful...my favorite tune off this album is On This Day, which meanders through a seemingly perfect arrangement of song and lyric. Robert Gomez is definitely a diamond in the rough, as his previous outings easily prove. However, this is definitely his best effort so far. Bravo Mr. Gomez! I look forward to seeing you live and following your career as it ascends.

This album might just be...

the album of the millennium.
