iTunes Review

On their final album, Q-Tip, Phife Dawg, Ali Shaheed Muhammad, and Jarobi rekindle a chemistry that endeared them to hip-hop fans worldwide. Filled with exploratory instrumental beds, creative samples, supple rhyming, and serious knock, it passes the headphone and car stereo test. “Kids…” is like a rap nerd’s fever dream, Andre 3000 and Q-Tip slaying bars. Phife—who passed away in March 2016—is the album’s scion, his roughneck style and biting humor shining through on “Black Spasmodic” and “Whateva Will Be.” “We the People” and “The Killing Season” (featuring Kanye West) show ATCQ’s ability to move minds as well as butts. We got it from Here... Thank You 4 Your service is not a wake or a comeback—it’s an extended visit with a long-missed friend, and a mic-dropping reminder of Tribe’s importance and influence.

A New Height for Tribe

Good lord, in this worst year of 2016, with the redneck apocalypse on our doorstep, what greater revelation than a new album from A Tribe Called Quest. Thank you so much

But sweet lord, who could imagine it would be this good? Q-Tip sounds better than ever, Phife is as young and energetic as the first album, Busta has dropped an octave but lost none of his swagger. The beats are left-field, the guests are exciting and lo, IT'S POLITICAL!! It's aimed right at the terror of our times and has something eloquent and positive to say.

Thank you thank you thank you!!!

This is NOT ATCQ trying to sound like 2016 rappers. This is NOT ATCQ trying to recreate their past. THIS is ATCQ making a flawless album in 2016 as only Tribe could do. Flawless production. Gifted lyrics. Just the right amount of features. 9.9/10

Formed: 1988 in Queens, NY

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

Without question the most intelligent, artistic rap group during the 1990s, A Tribe Called Quest jump-started and perfected the hip-hop alternative to hardcore and gangsta rap. In essence, they abandoned the macho posturing rap music had been constructed upon, and focused instead on abstract philosophy and message tracks. The "sucka MC" theme had never been completely ignored in hip-hop, but Tribe confronted numerous black issues -- date rape, use of the word nigger, the trials and tribulations of...
