iTunes Editors’ Notes

Not only did these guys give themselves a name that evokes weighty expanse and the potential for drama, but they’re from Texas, where big, silent skies and open spaces get into your blood. So it’s no surprise The Calm Blue Sea make grand, sweeping music — think Godspeed You Black Emperor! or Explosions In the Sky — and can impart a sense of dread as easily as they can invoke grandeur and grace. There are pastoral pianos and surging guitars, swells of percussion and gently waning sonic washes that are usually the calm before the storm. Most of these lengthy songs have several crescendos (denouements are marked with somber pianos or momentous silence), and as a whole, this debut plays beautifully as a cinematic and evocative piece of work that was criminally underrated upon its original release in 2008. Actually, the first six tracks were released then, as a self-titled EP, and they’ve since been remastered and joined by two new beauties, “Fire” and “Man of Dangerous Dreams.” This is music to get lost in; just make sure you’re firmly anchored.

This music definitely works for me. Recommended to any fans of Explosions in the Sky, Mono, or Mogwai. The Calm Blue Sea is truly a hidden gem.

Fans of post-rock, look no further. One of the best group of artists I've had the pleasure of listening to in a long time. The album flows beautifully and brings with it a fistful of emotion. Reminds me of the Evpatoria Report, which says quite a lot about this band. An easy 5 stars.
