Editors’ Notes

Rocking the same type of shock-value "me so crazy" rap as a young Eminem, the Odd Future dudes, and most of the acts on Tech N9ne's Strange Music label, Jarren Benton rhymes extensively about getting wasted, killing or maiming people, and assorted debauchery—all with a decidedly tongue-in-cheek, semi-comedic steez. He's built a cult following thanks to mixtapes like Huffing Glue with Hasselhoff and Freebasing with Kevin Bacon and is known for his somewhat squeaky voice, lightning-quick flow, and goofy wordplay. My Grandmas Basement is his first official album, featuring uniquely Southern-fried production from Kato and Smka. Some of the more juvenile tracks here seem aimed squarely at the junior high market—"PBR & Reefer" could be an Afroman outtake—while others show a surprising depth, like the breakup jam "Heart Attack." Vinnie Paz, R.A. the Rugged Man, Hopsin, and Dizzy Wright all make appearances, and highlights include "Dreams," "My Adidas," and "Cadillacs & Chevys."

By the time Benton was 17, he was heavily involved in the Atlanta scene as a producer and a live act. In 2011, he self-released his first EP, Huffin’ Glue with Hasselhoff, and followed it up with the...
