Editors’ Notes

We Shall Overcome is a loose and loopy jamboree of classic folk songs popularized by Pete Seeger recorded live without rehearsals over three days and nine years. The first batch was made in 1997 for a Seeger tribute album that Springsteen came across while researching tapes for a second planned career retrospective of unreleased recordings, a la 1998's Tracks box. He decided to flesh things out with a full-length album and invited 13 musicians to crowd into his home and capture the fire n' brimstone of a spontaneous hootenanny turned spiritual quest. Springsteen's singing throughout is vibrant and impassioned, whether he's delivering a music book standard such as "Old Dan Tucker" or a charging sing-alonglike "Pay Me My Money Down." Accordion, tuba, banjo, saxophone, trombone, violin, and upright bass create a crackin' ramshackle Salvation Army band unconcerned with stepping on each other's toes. While Springsteen has carefully chosen these songs, he never allows his reverence for the history to prevent him from shouting with pure menace.

Customer Reviews

Good Became Excellent

Unbelievable! The last 3 songs on this CD are worth the price of admission alone. Those (like me) that already own the original verison might bristle at laying the $$$ for the new edition. I emphatically suggest purchasing it. The new songs focus the album on the current political climate in a very pointed manner. His critique of W's response to Katrina is better than ANYTHING the NY Times could print. BUY THIS ALBLUM. This is better than The Rising and approaches Born To Run in terms of excellence!

iTunes Gets it Right!

Not only is this album great...Not only are the new tracks great...but iTunes is great for not making the new tracks Album only!

Great Albums One of the best of the year but greedy record companies

Yes this is an amazing album....AGAIN!. So Sony re releases it just a few months after its intial release with five new bonus tracks. Sure I can download only those five from iTunes but with the great albums by great artists, I choose to get the CD for the quality. packaging and no limitation of uses. Sony should release an EP of the new cuts. And record companies wonder what's going on with sales!!!!

In the decades following his emergence on the national scene in 1975, Bruce Springsteen proved to be that rarity among popular musicians, an artist who maintained his status as a frontline recording and performing star, consistently selling millions of albums and selling out arenas and stadiums around the world year after year, as well as retaining widespread critical approbation, with ecstatic reviews greeting those discs and shows. Although there were a few speed bumps along the way in Springsteen's...
