Album Review

Street Date Tuesday marks the "return" (with a new lineuop) of the Magnolias after a few years of silence, and it does betray the slight drop in quality bands tend to experience with records like these — the Minneapolitan power-pop sound is intact, but simply doesn't seem to have the spark of previous releases.

insanely great ROCK album.

any kids picking up gibsons and plugging into marshall stacks need to go to the magnolias school of rock to see how it's done. and if you ever have the good fortune of seeing them live it's like getting kicked in the teeth....exactly what a great rockshow should be.

A scruffy Minneapolis punk-pop band with all the melodies of their Twin Cities forebears (Hüsker Dü, the Replacements, Soul Asylum), the Magnolias formed around vocalist and guitarist John Freeman, who proved to be the only constant in the band's career. Recording for Twin/Tone, the group worked with Hüsker Dü's Grant Hart for their noisy 1986 debut, Concrete Pillbox. Later albums For Rent and Dime Store Dream showed the Magnolias toning down the chaos and leaning closer to the pop side of punk,...
