Crazy P is back!

While "Stop Space Return" remains my favorite CD by this group, this CD is infinitely listenable. This CD is a quieter effort than the last CD which is one of my favorite CDs of the last few years. What I most like about Crazy P is that I don't get tired of their songs - they hold up. Why they are not globally successful surprises me as I meet few who do not like their sound. My favorite tracks here are "Beatbox", "Wecanonlybewhoweare", "The Unbearable Lightness of Being" and the title track. If you like Crazy P, you should also pay attention to Roisin Murphy and her old band Moloko.

Its pretty good, especially when compared to today's, dare I say, over-abundance of electronic music, but it remains just that, "pretty good". Admittedly I am at times a tough critic, but I've had a soft spot for Crazy P ever since I heard their SLICK remix of Mujava's "Township Funk" and soon after purchased their 2005 album "A Night On Earth" which I kind of slowly fell in love with; and later, 2008's "Stop Space Return" which had some instant and long-time favorites. (Nothing beats putting the playlist on random and having a good Crazy P jam surprise you…and your friends!) Most people with an ounce of rhythm in them can't help shaking a tail-feather or tappin' their toes to a song like "Wishing For"

….But this one comes up short for me. Perhaps it'll grow on me, but for now it remains certainly a Respectable creation, and GOOD MUSIC, just not the likes of the masterpieces that have preceded it.

Crazy P has always harkened back to a more pure and archetypal kind of dance music with roots in R&B, Jazz and Soul fuzed delicately with Disco/ House rhythms that range from subtle to powerful. This album is inherently no different except that is does have a noticeably more "modern" or technologically driven, almost industrial feel, which I like. But it just doesn't bring it together well. It makes me long for either a REAL driving house track, or a COOLER, more sophisticated one. It spends too much time in the middle, between hard and soft, slow and fast, light and dark. It feels wishy washy.

I like "Beatbox", and "Twisted" alright, but they just don't exude that level of perfection of their predecessors.

Formed: 1995 in Nottingham, England

Genre: Dance

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

The band formerly known as Crazy Penis came from humble beginnings, when two musicians -- Chris Todd (aka Hot Toddy) and Jim Baron (aka Ron Basejam) -- met at Nottingham University in 1995. They spent much of their free time sampling records they had bought, utilizing an Atari and Akai S-Series sampler and generally playing around with the house and disco sounds they both loved. After attracting the attention of local label Paper Recordings in 1998, they released their debut album, A Nice Hot Bath...
