It’s impossible to listen to Guts Club’s debut album without thinking of the second Palace Brothers album, Days in the Wake. Both feature a solitary figure—Will Oldham for Palace Brothers, Lindsey Baker for Guts Club—strumming and fingerpicking an acoustic guitar while a chair squeaks and their unusual, but somehow perfect, singing voice guides songs that feel like they could fall apart at any second. Baker’s bio says that she’s a former child beauty queen whose father was an arm-wrestling enthusiast. This unusually desolate album was recorded by Tyler Wood of Oh My Goodness somewhere in New York’s Catskills Mountains.
