iTunes Review

How can a trio of cute Japanese women who perform simple pop-punk garage songs in both English and Japanese avoid being a novelty act after playing for 30 years? The Osaka-based Shonen Knife answers that question on the title song from its 18th album, Pop Tune. “Pop Tune” is a wonderful and loud paean to the delirious pleasures of pop music. It’s about three minutes long, and when it’s over you’ll hit "repeat." “Since you’re already here/think of happy things,” singer/guitarist Naoko Yamano intones just before the heavy riffs kick in. A few seconds later, the meaning's revealed: “When I listen to the music/I get power.” And, really, that’s all there is to it. Sure, you’ve heard these same chords and melodies and everything before, but there's so much good-natured spirit here that none of that matters. The wheel is not only reinvented here; it sparkles with psychedelic glitter.

Customer Reviews

They sound just as good if not better. It's a bit more polished than from the works back in the 90's. It's perfect the summer album for new beginnings and nostalgic daydreams.

Awesome album.

I don't know how they do it, but it is completely impossible to listen to anything they've done and not smile. This album is no different.

"Pop Tune" and "Osaka Rock City" are both wonderfully catchy.

Fizzy and Rocked Out As Ever!

Most bands wear down with time. Most bands are not Shonen Knife. These ladies just get faster and catchier. If you are interested enough to be reading this, you probably should need this album. It might be their best one since Let's Knife!

During the early-'90s alternative wave, veteran Japanese indie rock trio Shonen Knife made major fans out of alt-rock's elite (Sonic Youth, Nirvana, and Redd Kross, among others) and built a solid worldwide cult following with their Ramones meets the Beatles brand of sticky-sweet punk-pop. Formed by Michie Nakatani (vocals, bass), Naoko Yamano (vocals, guitar), and Atsuko Yamano (drums), Shonen Knife started in December 1981 in their hometown of Osaka, Japan, where all three members were working...
