iTunes Review

Magic Sam’s debut, released on Delmark in 1967, introduced the world to Chicago’s West Side sound. This isn’t the beefy swagger of the city’s Chess era. The elegant and stylish bluesman’s reedy yelp and tremolo-laden guitar reflect a love for Motown’s sweet melodicism (“That’s All I Need”) and lean, rocking swing (“I Feel So Good - I Wanna Boogie”). Even when Magic Sam gets low, down, and dirty on J.B. Lenoir’s “Mama, Mama - Talk to Your Daughter,” he sounds disarmingly sophisticated.

Customer Reviews

the 5 stars are for the ALBUM

itunes gets one star. WHAT IF I WENT INTO A RECORD STORE AND THEY TOLD ME THEY HAD GREAT ALBUMS BUT COULD ONLY GIVE ME THREE SONGS FROM EACH OF THOSE ALBUMS. GET IT TOGETHER, WE NEED WHOLE ALBUMS. IF YOU ARE GOING TO HHAVE AN ALBUM IN YOUR STORE, GET IT ALL.

One of the Greatest Albums by one of the Greatest Artists you've never heard of.

THIS REALY NEEDS TO BE THE WHOLE ALBUM. This is one of the greatest blues album ever recorded. Magic Sam was a brilliant guitar player and a hell of a singer. All three songs here are great. "All Your Love" is Sam's signature tune, he recorded/rewrote it numerous time, but this is 'the' version. "Lookin Good" is a great instrumental. The studio version is laid back to live versions of this song where Sam really lets loose on guitar. "Mama Mama" is my personal favorite here.

West Side Soul Shortage

This is one of the greatest Chicago blues albums ever recorded. To include only three songs from a classic album is a travesty! iTunes, you should be ashamed.

No blues guitarist better represented the adventurous modern sound of Chicago's West side more proudly than Sam Maghett. He died tragically young (at age 32 of a heart attack), just as he was on the brink of climbing the ladder to legitimate stardom, but Magic Sam left behind a thick legacy of bone-cutting blues that remains eminently influential around his old stomping grounds to this day. Maghett (one of his childhood pals was towering guitarist Morris Holt, who received his Magic Slim handle...
