Phonographic Memory

Delicious melodic guitar pop out of Austin, Texas. Led by a talented singer/songwriter by the name of JoDee Purkeypile, the Central Texan quintet eschews any overt stylistic alliance (outside of an obvious fondness for 80s British pop) and simply fills up a cookie sheet’s worth of wonderful songs on Phonographic Memory. “Save Me,” “Light Up” and “Saints” fulfill the daily requirement for near-perfect pop, while “All Over Your Body” and “This Night” stretch out with hip-wiggling rhythms and textural feedback. Good songwriting, good performances, strong production—nothing but good stuff here.

Ridiculously Talented

JoDee is just flat-out great -- and not in that "I like his songs, so that makes him a genius" way. Listen closely to this album, and you can hear a first-rate pop mind at work at every level. From song structure to musicianship to lyrics (which make about as much sense as some early Michael Stipe songs, and are satisfying in that same kind of way), this guy's the real deal. A lot of Alice Rose reviews mention the Beatles, and while that comparison is inevitably unfair, I will say that much of Phonographic Memory sounds like a very, very good Geroge Harrison record.
