Favorite New Thing
Like the Secret Policeman's Ball records of yore, this record does what a live album is supposed to do: reveal the core of the tune, and often, the artist who is singing it. Martha Wainwright wails and shimmies; Regina Spektor pirouettes. Rachel Loshak's "China Doll" is chilling and defiant, a gem. If you're the type who downloads only one, this is the one. But almost all of these performances are superb, and immediate. This concert series allows for songwriters to reimagine their work for supportive audiences in unique, intimate settings. Joseph Arthur transforms "Crying Like A Man," from his first record, into a sort of cosmic dirge. Unlike the studio version, Jesse Harris' earnest take on "Slow Down" sounds less like an invitation to stay at the party and more like a warning to leave it, soon. And Chris Garneau, an Artists Den discovery, shows again here why his much-anticipated debut is sure to be one of the best records of 2007.
I can't believe it's live!
These artists all sound excellent, are you sure it's live? I listened to the first two songs and it already had me hooked. (Even though I guess I am kind of biased, being such a fan of Regina Spektor and all). But even if I hadn't known it was her, I would have still loved the song, along with the rest of the album. If you're someone who likes songs that help you mellow out, the types of songs that you can fall asleep to (in a good way), then this is the perfect album!
Good because of Chris Garneau
I'm happy to see that Chris Garneau is actually squeezing into some of these mixed cd's. Hes an incredibly good and new up and coming singer/songwriter. You can get his full cd from kosher records, you won't be dissapointed.
