Album Review

Like the artist himself, the music on this brilliant album defies all categories, embracing Terry Callier's wide range of influences and experiences. Callier's musical kaleidoscope is filled with funk, rock, folk, jazz, and even classical influences. "Dancing Girl" opens the album with Charles Stepney's majestic orchestration. This opus is the album's pinnacle, moving with soft intensity toward soul-stirring crescendos. Songs like "What Color Is Love" and "Ho Tsing Mee (A Song of the Sun)," an elegant antiwar prayer of confusion, somehow avoid clichés or take them to another level. "You Goin' to Miss Your Candyman" was made popular by Urban Species when they sampled it on "Listen" in the early '90s, and not surprisingly, it sounds better in its original form. No matter where you turn, Callier's passionate voice captures the sweeping drama of the human condition. A lost romantic amid "concrete front yards," this album is a must-have for any music connoisseur.

Possibly the greast album by Terry Callier

Terry's sweet mellow voice mixed in with the beautiful arrangements by Cadet Studios makes for a legendary album. I always thought that Charles Stepney and Terry Calliier were meant to work together and this album proves it. Stepney seems to know how to finish the background tones to complete Callier's music. Dancing Girl is so powerful and poetic that it is hard to stop repeating it and listen to the rest of the album. What Color Is Love switches gears providing a more relaxing and romantic atmosphere. The whole album flows over you constantly pumping poetry, emotion, soul and mind-blowing arrangements.

What Color is Love

A must-have if you're a Terry Callier fan or a lover of 70's smooth urban folk music. "What Color of Love" is also a great album to add to your collection if you're a Charles Stepney follower. You'll hear shades of Minnie Ripperton's "Come to My Garden" album and anything smooth from the early collection of Earth, Wind and Fire. Enjoy!

An incredible singer

Terry Callier far surpasses many of his more well known contemporaries as he exhibits incredible range and emotion on one of the great all time albums. If you asked what singer paved the way for later stars, it was Terry Callier.

For far too long, folk-jazz mystic Terry Callier was the exclusive province of a fierce but small cult following; a singer/songwriter whose cathartic, deeply spiritual music defied simple genre categorization, he went all but unknown for decades, finally beginning to earn the recognition long due him after his rediscovery during the early '90s. Born in Chicago's North Side -- also home to Curtis Mayfield, Jerry Butler, and Ramsey Lewis -- and raised in the area of the notorious Cabrini Green housing...
