iTunes Review

While this box set isn't entirely complete, it does sound as fresh and alive as the days of vinyl, courtesy of Johnny Marr's remastering efforts. The Smiths were one of the most essential bands of the '80s, reeling off a string of singles unrivaled in their intelligence, indelible hooks, and originality. Each of The Smiths' four studio albums is present here, along with their live album Rank, various singles compilations, videos for several tunes, and a short Derek Jarman film for "The Queen Is Dead." While the sheer quantity available here is clearly aimed at Smiths fanatics, it also saves anyone looking to immerse themselves in the group the hassle of picking things up piecemeal. It's safe to say that if you love one Smiths tune, you'll want them all; such was the quality of their work. Morrissey's lyrics are poignant, humorous, and wildly adventurous, while Johnny Marr plays guitar with a similar lyricism. No serious collection of late 20th-century music should be without "There Is a Light That Never Goes Out," "These Things Take Time," and another two dozen of the tunes here.

The Smiths & Morrissey!

The Smiths are one of the best bands of all-time. I definitely recommend this collection to any music lover. Wow!

happiness is a sad song

There is definitely a Smiths (& a Morrissey) song to describe every miserable moment in life. Thats the silver lining to it all.

missing a track?

anyone notice that on iTunes, the “original” John Peel version of Handsome Devil is not present? It is present on other sites, without naming, but you can see it on the number of tracks on Hatful of Hollow - 15 (on Complete) instead of 16. Id like to get the iTunes version (although they’re probably identical recordings), but don’t like getting screwed out of a track…I know it’s only another $1.29 to just buy it a la carte, but why can’t they get it right?

Biography

Formed: 1982 in Manchester, England

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '80s

The Smiths were the definitive British indie rock band of the '80s, marking the end of synth-driven new wave and the beginning of the guitar rock that dominated English rock into the '90s. Sonically, the group was indebted to the British Invasion, crafting ringing, melodic three-minute pop singles, even for their album tracks. But their scope was far broader than that of a revivalist band. The group's core members, vocalist Morrissey and guitarist Johnny Marr, were obsessive rock fans inspired by...
