Editors’ Notes

Alabama-born New Yorker Naomi Shelton was nearly 70 when her debut for the famed R&B revivalist label Daptone was released, and a lifetime of experience is easily audible in her gritty, impassioned vocal delivery. Shelton blends old-school gospel with the kind of '60s soul sound that artists like Sharon Jones are so good at reviving, except that Shelton had already begun singing when those sounds were having their heyday. From original tunes like the sinuous, slow-burning, minor-key title track to covers of gospel classics like the traditional "Jordan River" and Sam Cooke's "A Change Is Gonna Come," Shelton hits that rarefied zone where divine inspiration meets the street.

Yummy. Praise God.

After graduating high school in 1958, she moved first to New York, then spent time in Florida, where the greats...
