I Want it All-and Got it with Baby!
Baby is a musical that suffered on Broadway from a) a bad marketing campaign, b) subject matter that people didn't want to see, c) a bad physical design and d) opened during the same season as the mega-musical ultra-smash La Cage Aux Folles. Had it opened a season later with a better set design and more marketing, I wouldn't doubt that it would've lasted 5 times longer than it did (it played on Broadway for about 8 months). Baby is a quaint musical, with easily one of the five best American written scores of the 80's. The performers are all top-notch. The women are superb, especially Liz Callaway who has the purest and most beautiful voice any of us will ever hear. David Shire's music is beautiful, funky, and catchy and Richard Maltby Jr.'s lyrics are clever, moving and ingenious. Major highlights include: What Could be Better?, I Want it All, Fatherhood Blues, The Story Goes On, The Ladies Singing the Blues, Two People in Love, and And What If We Had Loved Like That? Any musical theatre fan should, no-needs, to buy this cast album. The score is quite amazing. I can't recommend it enough.
Musical Comedy Survives the 80's
In the wake of the epic drama musicals of the 80's, this little musical proved that tradional musical comedy material would survive and be transformed into the next millenium. The story, then and now, is contemporary and certainly will relate to the average audience member who has experienced (or will soon experience) the yawning chasm of impending parenthood. The songs are all wonderful, catchy, and the voices on this CD are a joy to listen to. Each couple experiences the highs and lows of expecting with laughter and occasional tears. It's a great show for a stock or amateur company to produce because the cast is small and the sets and costumes are contemporary.
For parents young or old, this is a great show and the music is wonderful. Listen, laugh, cry and enjoy!
