Editors’ Notes

Despite a mystifying lack of commercial airplay, Brooklyn super-emcee AZ remains one of the most celebrated lyricists in today's hip-hop. It's been nearly 20 years since his show-stealing debut on Nas' "Life's a Bitch," and he's still going strong, releasing consistently high-quality albums independently and (thankfully) never changing up his style to adapt to current trends. G.O.D. (standing for "Gold, Oil and Diamonds") is his fourth project to drop in the last year and a half. It finds him doing what he does best: painting vivid pictures with his instantly recognizable, slightly lispy flow. He rhymes about real-life struggles and triumphs over excellent, sample-saturated production from Batkave and Moss. A relatively under-the-radar release from the heads at, meant to tide fans over until his much-hyped Doe Or Die II drops, this is another top-shelf effort from one of the best in the business. Don't miss "Do Me This Way," "Live Your Life," and "Hustle in My Blood."

This guy keeps amazing me. He's been in the rap game for about 15 years. So many artists have come and gone during that span, and here he is still putting out solid music. He's been on a tear since putting out The Format in 2006. So if you like ringtone rappers like Young Jeezy, Yung Juc, 50 Cent, and some of these other clowns, then this cd isn't for you. If excellent wordplay and vivid storytelling (something lost today in rap music) is what you like, then cop this album.

5 star!

i love to listen to rock and metal music and can't stand rap at all but when i heard this album i was so shock that someone made an rap album that i can listen to im tired of rapper talking about money and girls. kinda sad that you have to listen to that stuff just to make your self feel better. love this album az i just might buy your collections. ps love your name AZ ur cool

One of the numerous thoughtful gangsta rappers to emerge from New York during the mid-'90s, AZ enjoyed critical success early in his career, particularly with his debut album, Doe or Die (1995), but commercial success largely eluded him over the years. Born in Brooklyn, he initially garnered attention with his guest feature on "Life's a Bitch," one of the standout tracks on Nas' landmark debut album, Illmatic (1994). In the wake of Doe or Die's critical success, AZ collaborated with Nas in the ill-fated...
