Album Review

Diamonds and Emeralds is a long-overdue retrospective of Care's sadly brief career; compared to the vast majority of their synth-pop peers, the duo was the very essence of understatement, with Paul Simpson's relaxed vocals perfectly complementing Ian Broudie's simple yet engaging electronic sound. In addition to their lone hit, "Flaming Sword," athe collection also includes their debut single "My Boyish Days," as well as "Cymophane" and "An Evening in the Ray."

Ride A White Cloud

Ian Broudie and Paul Simpson briefly paired up in the prime of their youth and produced several dreamy mini-epics under the name Care in the early '80s. "An Evening in the Ray" is just toweringly G-O-R-G-E-O-U-S melancholia...but there are several other glorious songs here mixing acoustic guitar and synth atmospherics and deep, brooding vocals from the Wild Swans crooner. "Flaming Sword," "Sad Day For England," "Besides 1 and 2," and "Whatever Possessed You" in particular are all swoonsome new romantic gems. A couple of caveats: The tracklisting and cramming all the tracks together for one "album" diminishes their individual effect. Also, this collection is missing the amazing "Besides 3 & 4" from the "Whatever Possessed You" 12". Don't think me ungrateful; I appreciate the fine stewards who released this very rare material, but if you're going to do embark on such a project, don't neglect some of the group's best songs! On that note, the original 12" of "Flaming Sword" contained "On the White Cloud," an instrumental of the vocal track here. For what it's worth, that instrumental is stunningly beautiful - the one I listened to and loved for years without knowing there was a version with vocals - and well worth hunting down. Would have been nice to have these, but it's a luxury to quibble about these things, after all...

Years Active: '80s

By the time an album was released from the British duo Care, the group had been defunct for more than a decade. Care formed in Liverpool, England, in 1983. Featuring singer Paul Simpson (ex-keyboardist for the Teardrop Explodes) and guitarist Ian Broudie (of Big in Japan and Original Mirrors), Care blended Simpson's enchanting, heartbroken vocals and pensive lyrics with Broudie's shimmery riffs and gleaming synthesizers. Care's first single, "My Boyish Days," introduced the band's new wave style:...
