The Real Deal

I heard these guys this morning for the first time on local Austin public radio. It's SXSW here right now. Low Anthem had left Dallas yesterday in their van, which broke down on the way. They didn't get into Austin until 3:30 am. It was a struggle but they made their gig on KUT at 9 am. KUT plays a lot of bands live, especially during SXSW. I was kind of feeling sorry for these guys until they started playing. They are the real deal: well crafted, thoughtful songs, authentic not formulaic, excellent musicianship. If they stick together, they won't be a secret for long...

I saw them live in Worcester and they became my favorite band instantly. Do not be deterred by the somewhat low quality of the album, the music is top notch, and they are even better live.

The Low Anthem play a beautiful mellange of folk music, and manage to encompass beautiful and subtle textures on numerous instruments: pump organ, clarinet, trumpet and cell phone to name a few. Their song writing is sophisticated, yet accessible and completely full of soul. This is an album to hold onto.

Ben Knox Miller and Jeff Prystowsky -- both students at Brown University, as well as late-night DJs at the school's radio station -- formed the Low Anthem in 2006, drawing upon their background as classical composers to help mold the group's eclectic music. Jocie Adams joined one year later, and the group began widening its arsenal of instruments...
