iTunes Review

Is Bess Rogers a folkie with punk instincts or an indie-rocker with an acoustic bent? Her EP Bess Rogers Presents Bess Rogers makes it hard to place her in a neat category — and that turns out to be a source of strength for this eclectic singer/songwriter. Rogers — a member of Ingrid Michaelson’s touring band — likes to surround her sweet lyric sentiments with a tough outer coating as she recounts tales of fumbled romance and fragile happiness. Her acute ear for pop hooks is evident in “Come Home” (matching a sunny chorus with a thumping beat) and “Favorite Day” (a hard-charging tune reminiscent of early Go-Go’s). More introspective are coffeehouse-style ballads like “What We Want” and “All In Good Fun.” Dan Romer (another Michaelson associate) gives these tracks a nicely layered production, emphasizing the playful, anything-can-happen spirit of Rogers’ songs. More than anything, there’s a sense here that Rogers is exploring her sonic palette as well as her personal feelings. It’s this freewheeling quality that makes the EP an engaging effort by an arresting new talent.

Smooth-Voiced Songstress

I've been a fan of Bess Rogers since her very first record, Decisions Based on Information (which is also great!). The first thing that leaps out of your speakers is Bess's incredibly clear, flexible, and flat-out gorgeous voice. A few seconds later, you realize you're humming along with the track, whether it's a downtempo ballad or an upbeat, bouncy track filled with the sounds of Bess strumming the banjolele (a real instrument, in fact).

Bess's songs are catchy without being annoying, clever without trying too hard, and beautiful without being weepy or sappy. She is a first rate talent, and I encourage everyone to get to know her music now. If you do, then I'm sure that, like me, you will be eagerly awaiting everything this young woman has to offer us.

Thanks for making great music, Bess. And keep on keeping on!

Great music from Bess. Favorite Day is definitely the best track, but Come Home and What We Want are a close second.

Freakin Awesome

I mean, I had this EP on repeat for like an entire week. For reals though, Bess comes through with her honest, heartfelt lyrics. And she includes lots of instruments (trumpets, flutes, etc.) and lots of "oh, oh, oh's" that get stuck in your head. I honestly can't choose a favorite song, but if you held a gun to my head, I'd have to pick Come Home and What We Want... see? I couldn't choose just one. You won't be able to either. And if you ever get a chance to see her live, DO IT. She might tell a funny joke or knight you or something. Enjoy!
