12 Songs, 44 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

A deeply felt collection of early-’70s soul, What’s Going On is a current-events chronicle that could get by on its burbling groove alone. The title track, “What’s Happening Brother,” and “Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)” are laden collages of supple post-funk rhythms and despairing urban mood that barely even need words to get their message across. Yet the lyrics match the music: The “picket lines and picket signs,” “trigger-happy policing,” poison wind, collapsing ghettos, and boys sent off to die are just a few of the details in these timeless portraits.

A must have album

This album is so much more than a collection of songs. This album is a time and a place. I can't speak highly enough of this music; beautiful, truly beautiful.

So Much In So Little

April 1, 2014 will mark thirty years since Marvin Gaye was killed. When he died a brand of music died. The brand of music that left with Marvin Gaye was uncompromising and it was truthful. “What’s Going On” is not a long album, but I’ll be damned if its not heavy. Marvin Gaye, Motown’s prince and poet, touches your heart with this album because he showed us his heart. This album is a must have. Every track serves as social commentary on the condition of humanity. RIP Marvin Gaye. You are greatly missed.

Wow!!!

I was looking at Rolling Stone's "Top 500 Albums of All Time" list and I came across this album at number six, gave it a listen, now I'm fascinated!! This deserves all the critical acclaim!! Officially one of my favorite albums of all time!!!

It's beautiful. That's what I have to say about it. It's powerful. When I first listened to it, I felt like I was transported back to 1971. You know an album is that good when it makes you feel like you're in a different time.
