My Favorite Recording of CAROUSEL

I saw this production a couple of weeks weeks ago, and it is absolutely wonderful. And this recording is stunning. Jessie Mueller is perfection as Julie Jordan, and she never ceases to amaze me with her versatility. Here we get to hear her gorgeous "legit" voice. She performs each song with such emotional honesty and such musicality, that I have to say she is easily the best Julie Jordan I've ever seen or heard. And I've heard all the recordings and seen any number of productions, including the legendary 1994 Lincoln Center revival. Joshua Henry is simply magnificent as Billy Bigelow. Renee Fleming stops the show cold when she sings "You'll Never Walk Alone," and this recording does her full justice. I love the orchestrations, and all of the cast. This has instantly become my favorite recording of CAROUSEL.

Gorgeous production with a stellar cast. Renée Fleming is a star!

Beautiful but...

I saw the production yesterday. Now listening to the recording. I have the same misgivings about both. There is a lot of amazing talent here. However... Problem one for me are the tempos. They are all so fast and the poignant songs seem rushed, like they don't have time to breathe. This was also true in the theater yesterday. Second is the phrasing of the lyrics. There is an effort to make everything interesting and conversational and to not just "Sing out, Louise"... They don't spin out beautiful long phrases. I think it compromises the beauty of the R&H score. This was very true in the theater. Third, why do they all sound like they are singing from the back of a wind tunnel? That's a problem in the recording. It's still enjoyable, but I find myself returning to Shirley Jones to hear a beautiful voice singing at a lovely slow tempo.
