Not so hot

Julie Newsome seems to be taking herself too seriously in these songs and in trying to sound "beautiful" she misses the mark making it sound affected and with no real emotion. It's really too bad since she has such a nice voice and picked such a great selection of songs to cover. She should lighten up and try making childrens lullabyes instead, she'd be great at that.

Large band frames fine west-coast singer

This is a first-rate disc by a west-coast singer, backed by a fine-tuned and surprisingly large-sounding group of musicians, complete with strings. Ms. Newsome’s choices run from the spiritual to powerful, bowl ‘em over in the balcony theatre tunes. I couldn’t find a dud in the bunch. My favorites include a pair of Brazilian-beat Basia tunes, “Astrud,” an ode to Astrud Gilberto, and a non-Brazilian version of “Promises” that features lots of pizzacato by the Conejo Strings. For me, it’s always a pleasure to hear different versions of two favorites - ”Somewhere Beyond The Sea,” and “You Belong To Me,” so put those among my favorites on this disc, as well. The arrangements are rich - from movie and TV music guy Stu Goldberg, whose work includes lots of stops between “The Wonder Years,” and “Amazing Race.” Mr. Goldberg also doubles on piano, keyboards and percussion. Dan Higgins does some fine work on saxophone, and with Rick Baptist on trumpet and Alan Kaplan on trombone, they all make the wind section sound about three times bigger. But none of it overshadows Ms. Newsome’s fine voice. This disc is highly recommended.
