Better Get Right

heard Howard and amazing band (violin, tuba, trombone, drums) play at barbes this month (may 2010) amazing show. true musicianship and the drummer put out a light that was beautiful from his dark corner on the stage...this album is so inspired and makes you want to move. howard is a true musician and songwriter, in the style of leonard cohen, dylan, bono..a true folk artist, transcending the genre really. i was inspired by the show and now i'm inspired by the album. wish the farmer track was here...

To and from New Orleans

Somewhere I read a description of this album as being a "love letter to New Orleans." After listening to it a few times--and I plan to listen to it many more--I'd say it's as much a love letter *from* New Orleans, as interpreted with great warmth and intensity by Howard Fishman and his fellow musicians.

Mr. Fishman, in addition to being lead vocalist and composer/lyricist of eight of the thirteen songs, also takes on the roles of arranger, guitarist, pianist, and--yes--even player of the Wurlitzer (is "Wurlitzer-ist" a term?). That's a lot of plates to keep spinning, but he manages to do it, making each song unique, allowing each song to tell its own story and reveal just a bit more of the mystique of New Orleans. I should add that the fervid singing of Howard Fishman adds much to the life of these songs.

The back-up band is called "The Biting Fish Brass Band," but they do a lot more than bite. In one song they they might have you feeling you're swaying gently in a hammock on a breezy summer's day; in the next they'll have you feeling you're being tossed up out of that hammock en route for the stratosphere.

As to the subject of all these songs, New Orleans; though it's a place I've never been physically, after hearing the songs of "Better Get Right," I feel I've been there musically. Give it a try.

Genre: Pop

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Howard Fishman infuses his music with a wide variety of influences, from New Orleans-style swing to underground pop. He grew up in Hartford, Connecticut, and began a career as an actor, director, and playwright. During his studies at Vassar College, he pursued a scholarly interest in the works of Eugene O'Neill. Turning his attention toward music, however, he taught himself guitar. His growing love of popular and folk musics led him to move to New Orleans in 1994, where he developed his unique sound...
