Must Have If You Have a Spiritual Jazz Connection

Jimmy Scott, what can I say.. I've seen him in the early 90's at the Super Club in NYC, mid 90s at the Santa Monica Room in Los Angeles and a few time at various Atlanta venues since. He is one of the few artists that truly make you understand what jazz has to do with the spirit. A Jimmy Scott interpretation of a song will leave you breathless. He never failed to take me there and I bought this because he's a must have so much so that Nancy Wilson said live in concert that she got some of "her thing" in terms of phrasing from Jimmy Scott.. now THAT is saying something so you don't have to believe me!

AMG Review

The three-CD box set includes 66 songs, arranged in chronological order, opening with six tracks cut in 1952 and concluding with nine tunes recorded in Chicago in 1972. Charles Mingus and sax player Budd Johnson can be heard on Disc One, tracks 10-13, which include Scott's inspired version of "When Did You Leave Heaven." When it comes to interpreting a ballad, Scott takes hold of a lyric and fills it with light and space. Even when performing obscure material, he always seems to find his way to the center of the song. As a stylist, he's positively elegant, but he complements this with a certain edgy quality that comes from his singular interpretive gift. He's not a predictable singer; he'll surprise the listener with the choices he makes in terms of inflection and timing. Some of the best material featured on this box set includes "Someone to Watch Over Me," "I'm Through With Love," "Close Your Eyes," "After I'm Gone," "Never Peace of Mind," "When It Comes to Love" and "I'll Be Around."

Singer Jimmy Scott (aka Little Jimmy Scott) had an unusual career conditioned by his physical limitations and record company machinations that sometimes prevented him from being heard, but he mounted a major comeback late in life. He was born one of ten children to Arthur and Justine Scott in Cleveland, Ohio, on July 17, 1925, and he first sang in church. His mother was killed in a car accident when he was 13, leaving him to be raised by foster parents. He suffered from a rare hereditary condition...
