iTunes Editors’ Notes

By now it should be evident that Kenny Chesney wasn’t just going through a Jimmy Buffett–inspired phase that started with 2002’s No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problems. Nearly 11 years after that album, Life on a Rock continues to champion easy living. This set plays like a reaction to 2012’s Welcome to the Fishbowl, for which Chesney only wrote three out of the 12 songs. Here he wrote or cowrote all but three of the 10 tunes, starting with the bongo-peppered “When I See This Bar,” which sounds like John Mellencamp singing from a tropical hotel swim-up bar. But it’s the semi-funky “Pirate Flag” (penned by Ross Copperman and David Lee Murphy) that opens the album like a Nashville-born hit groomed for the radio charts. Where some of Chesney’s country contemporaries have tried to go reggae, he went the extra mile and got reggae. “Spread the Love” features an awesome guest appearance by Bob Marley’s old band The Wailers, which helps make this song sound more legit than anything similarly attempted thus far by Chesney’s peers.

Stop Hating!

Do I really care that Kenny's music has always been an eclectic mix of country and island style? No! He seems to be one of the only artist out there who still writes their own music from the heart. I have seen KC perform at 65,000 person venues and Sloppy Joe's in Key West. He is one of the greatest musicians of my lifetime. Thanks for all you do!

Lost your way Kenny...

Get back to your roots, your songs we can relate to and sing along...I go back, never wanted nothing more, etc. Stop trying to be Jimmy Buffett.

Arts Boy, Kenny!

I love the smooth jams, like Be As You Are. This reminds me of a nice slow jam with a great storyline! Thanks for being the country man you are. Much gratitude!

Contemporary country star Kenny Chesney didn't have the immediate breakout success that many of his peers enjoyed upon signing with major labels, but gradually built up a significant following via hard work, pop-friendly ballads, and a likable "Average Joe" persona. Chesney was born in Knoxville, Tennessee in 1968 and raised in the nearby small town of Luttrell, best known as the home of Chet Atkins. He grew up listening to both country and rock & roll, but didn't get serious about music until...
